The developers of Planet Michael, an online virtual world devoted to the legacy and memory of the late Michael Jackson, want to be starting something that will attract mainstream and casual gamers scared off by hard-core MMOs like World of Warcraft and virtual worlds such as Second Life.

"There will be a whole restructuring of that kind of experience and it will be much easier to understand because we are talking about a mass audience now," says Martin Biallas, president/CEE of SEE Virtual Worlds and founder of its parent company Special Entertainment Events (SEE). He spoke to Game Hunters for USA TODAY's story on the Michael Jackson-themed virtual world that appeared in print Tuesday.

Planet Michael will offer games, communication, music and charity, he says. "Michael was all about 'heal the world' and making the world better. So we are trying to create something that, in the real world, humans could never create."

The planet will be stocked with areas devoted to Jackson's songs and interests. "We are in the designing process very deeply right now," says Josh Gordon, SEE Virtual Worlds' vice president of development and production. Designers are looking at "what would a futuristic land be like or what would Dangerous or Smooth Criminal or Bad or Beat It look like? What about songs like Leave Me Alone or even Ghost or Man in the Mirror? We take those as a starting point and then say, 'How do we build an environment and allow this massive user base of fans to come in here and immerse themselves in those themed areas?"


Planned to launch late next year, Planet Michael will be aligned with the Entropia Universe -- its publisher MindArk supplies Planet Michael's platform -- so players could move "from planet to planet and the skills you build up as a player actually translate across from one planet to another," Biallas says.

SEE Virtual Worlds plans to launch new entertainment-based planets every three months or so after Planet Michael takes flight. "Our plan is to create motion picture IP (intellectual property) planets and that's going to be our main focus," Biallas says. "There will be a planets based on several sports IPs. There will be several music planets aimed at maybe one or two major labels, but the planet just carrying one person's achievements, there's not going to be a lot of artists around that can carry that. ... Michael is certainly one, probably the only one I can think of."
